Read the short story below :

Jack and the Beanstalk

Once upon a time, there lived a widow woman and her son, Jack, on their small farm in the country.

Every day, Jack would help his mother with the chores - chopping the wood, weeding the garden and milking the cow.  But despite all their hard work, Jack and his mother were very poor with barely enough money to keep themselves fed.

"What shall we do, what shall we do?" said the widow, one spring day.  "We don't have enough money to buy seed for the farm this year!  We must sell our cow, Old Bess, and with the money buy enough seed to plant a good crop."

"All right, mother," said Jack, "it's market-day today.  I'll go into town and sell Bessy."

So Jack took the cow's halter in his hand, walked through the garden gate and headed off toward town.  He hadn't gone far when he met a funny-looking, old man who said to him, "Good morning, Jack."

"Good morning to you," said Jack, wondering how the little, old man knew his name.

"Where are you off to this fine morning?" asked the man.

"I'm going to market to sell our cow, Bessy."

"Well what a helpful son you are!" exclaimed the man, "I have a special deal for such a good boy like you."

The little, old man looked around to make sure no one was watching and then opened his hand to show Jack what he held.

"Beans?" asked Jack, looking a little confused.

"Three magical bean seeds to be exact, young man.  One, two, three!  So magical are they, that if you plant them over-night, by morning they grow right up to the sky," promised the funny little man.  "And because you're such a good boy, they're all yours in trade for that old milking cow."

"Really?" said Jack, "and you're quite sure they're magical?"

"I am indeed!  And if it doesn't turn out to be true you can have your cow back."

"Well that sounds fair," said Jack, as he handed over Bessy's halter, pocketed the beans and headed back home to show his mother.

"Back already, Jack?" asked his mother; "I see you haven't got Old Bess -- you've sold her so quickly.  How much did you get for her?"

Jack smiled and reached into his pocket, "Just look at these beans, mother; they're magical, plant them over-night and----"

"What!" cried Jack's mother.  "Oh, silly boy!  How could you give away our milking cow for three measly beans."  And with that she did the worst thing Jack had ever seen her do - she burst into tears.

Jack ran upstairs to his little room in the attic, so sorry he was, and threw the beans angrily out the window thinking, "How could I have been so foolish - I've broken my mother's heart."  After much tossing and turning, at last Jack dropped off to sleep.

When Jack woke up the next morning, his room looked strange.  The sun was shining into part of it like it normally did, and yet all the rest was quite dark and shady.  So Jack jumped up and dressed himself and went to the window.  And what do you think he saw?  Why, the beans he had thrown out of the window into the garden had sprung up into a big beanstalk which went up and up and up until it reached the sky.

Using the leaves and twisty vines like the rungs of a ladder, Jack climbed and climbed until at last, he reached the sky.  And when he got there he found a long, broad road winding its way through the clouds to a tall, square castle off in the distance.

Jack ran up the road toward the castle and just as he reached it, the door swung open to reveal a horrible lady giant, with one great eye in the middle of her forehead.

As soon as Jack saw her he turned to run away, but she caught him, and dragged him into the castle.

"Don't be in such a hurry, I'm sure a growing boy like you would like a nice, big breakfast," said the great, big, tall woman, "It's been so long since I got to make breakfast for a boy."

Well, the lady giant wasn't such a bad sort, after all -- even if she was a bit odd.  She took Jack into the kitchen, and gave him a chunk of cheese and a glass of milk.  But Jack had only taken a few bites when thump! thump! thump! the whole house began to tremble with the noise of someone coming.

"Goodness gracious me!  It's my husband," said the giant woman, wringing her hands, "what on earth shall I do?  There's nothing he likes better than boys broiled on toast and I haven't any bread left.  Oh dear, I never should have let you stay for breakfast.  Here, come quick and jump in here."  And she hurried Jack into a large copper pot sitting beside the stove just as her husband, the giant, came in.

He ducked inside the kitchen and said, "I'm ready for my breakfast -- I'm so hungry I could eat three cows.  Ah, what's this I smell?

Fee-fi-fo-fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishman,
Be he alive, or be he dead
I'll have his bones to grind my bread.

"Nonsense, dear," said his wife, "we haven't had a boy for breakfast in years.  Now you go and wash up and by the time you come back your breakfast'll be ready for you."

So the giant went off to tidy up -- Jack was about to make a run for it when the woman stopped him.  "Wait until he's asleep," she said, "he always has a little snooze after breakfast."

Jack peeked out of the copper pot just as the giant returned to the kitchen carrying a basket filled with golden eggs and a sickly-looking, white hen.  The giant poked the hen and growled, "Lay" and the hen laid an egg made of gold which the giant added to the basket.

After his breakfast, the giant went to the closet and pulled out a golden harp with the face of a sad, young girl.  The giant poked the harp and growled, "Play" and the harp began to play a gentle tune while her lovely face sang a lullaby.  Then the giant began to nod his head and to snore until the house shook.

When he was quite sure the giant was asleep, Jack crept out of the copper pot and began to tiptoe out of the kitchen.  Just as he was about to leave, he heard the sound of the harp-girl weeping.  Jack bit his lip, sighed and returned to the kitchen.  He grabbed the sickly hen and the singing harp, and began to tiptoe back out.  But this time the hen gave a cackle which woke the giant, and just as Jack got out of the house he heard him calling, "Wife, wife, what have you done with my white hen and my golden harp?"

Jack ran as fast as he could and the giant, realizing he had been tricked, came rushing after - away from the castle and down the broad, winding road.  When he got to the beanstalk the giant was only twenty yards away when suddenly he saw Jack disappear - confused, the giant peered through the clouds and saw Jack underneath climbing down for dear life.  The giant stomped his foot and roared angrily.

Fee-fi-fo-fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishman,
Be he alive, or be he dead
I'll have his bones to grind my bread.

The giant swung himself down onto the beanstalk which shook with his weight.  Jack slipped, slid and climbed down the beanstalk as quickly as he could, and after him climbed the giant.

As he neared the bottom, Jack called out, "Mother! Please! Hurry, bring me an axe, bring me an axe."  And his mother came rushing out with Jack's wood chopping axe in her hand, but when she came to the enormous beanstalk she stood stock still with fright.

Jack jumped down, got hold of the axe and began to chop away at the beanstalk.  Luckily, because of all the chores he'd done over the years, he'd become quite good at chopping and it didn't take long for him to chop through enough of the beanstalk that it began to teeter.  The giant felt the beanstalk shake and quiver so he stopped to see what was the matter.  Then Jack gave one last big chop with the axe, and the beanstalk began to topple over.  Then the giant fell down and broke his crown, and the beanstalk came toppling after.

The singing harp thanked Jack for rescuing her from the giant - she had hated being locked up in the closet all day and night and wanted nothing more than to sit in the farmhouse window and sing to the birds and the butterflies in the sunshine.

With a bit of patience and his mother's help, it didn't take long for Jack to get the sickly hen back in good health and the grateful hen continued to lay a fresh golden egg every day.

Jack used the money from selling the golden eggs to buy back Old Bess, purchase seed for the spring crop and to fix up his mother's farm.  He even had enough left over to invite every one of his neighbours over for a nice meal, complete with music from the singing harp.

And so Jack, his mother, Old Bess, the golden harp and the white hen lived happy ever after.

Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves

This is Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves story. In Persia, there lived two brothers. They were Kassim and Ali Baba. One day, after their father died, Kassim, the older brother said, "It's not your home anymore. Go away and don't come back." Ali Baba left his house. He went up to the mountain and saw forty thieves. In front of the big rock, they said, "OPEN SESAME!" With the magic words, the big rock opened, and all the forty thieves went inside. "What a sight," thought Ali Baba.
After all the thieves left, Ali Baba came closer and he said, "OPEN SESAME!" The door on the rock opened and Ali Baba went in. The cave was full of treasures. "Amazing!" shouted Ali Baba. He took some of the treasures home. He became rich.

Soon, All Baba's brother Kassim heard about it. He was very jealous. Kassim visited Ali Baba and said, "Where did you get all these things?" Kassim kept asking and asking. Finally, Ali Baba told Kassim about the secret place. Kassim could not wait. He ran to the cave and he shouted, "OPEN SESAME!" Soon, the door opened. He was very excited and he filled up his sack with all the treasures.
However, when he was ready to go out, he found the door was closed. He cried and tried to think of the secret words. He said, "OPEN DONKEY! OPEN MONKEY!" He tried and tried. But, it didn't work, not at all. Soon, the thieves came back, and Kassim was killed by the angry thieves.
Ali Baba heard about his brother. He went to the cave, took his brother, and he buried him in a nice place. The thieves were angrier than before. They said, "Someone was here, and he took the man. Let's go to the town and find him." Soon, they knew it was Ali Baba.

Finally, one of the thieves saw Ali Baba. He put a mark on Ali Baba's door. However, All Baba's maid saw it. She put the same mark on all the doors in town.
The next day, the thieves came to get Ali Baba. However, all the doors had the same marks, and they could not find Ali Baba's house. In the end, the thieves found All Baba's house and they went in. They hid in the big jars. But again, the maid saw them hiding. She poured boiling oil into the jars. The thieves in the jars screamed, and then they all died.
One last thief was the chief. He went to All Baba's house as a guest. But, Ali Baba's maid knew who he was. "Be my guest ! Relax and enjoy the show!" said the maid. She brought two swords, and she started to dance. As she moved, she came closer to the thief. Then, she stabbed him quickly. Later, Ali Baba learned what happened. He was surprised by her help and wisdom. "Thank you for saving my life," he said. Ali Baba married his maid and they lived happily ever after.

The Blue Jackal

In a jungle, there lived a jackal. One day, looking for food, he wandered into a nearby village. A pack of dogs saw him and surrounded him. They attacked him and tried to drive him away. In order to save himself, the jackal ran into a nearby house. This house belonged to a washerman.

The front yard of the washerman's house was full of big buckets. The jackal jumped into one of these pails to hide himself. The dogs followed him but could not find him anywhere and went away.

After a while, the jackal came out of the bucket. What he did not realize was that the bucket in which he had hidden was full of blue dye and now his whole body was dyed blue. When the dogs saw him, they did not recognize him. Instead they thought it was some strange animal and ran away terrified.

The jackal went back to the forest. Everywhere he went the animals would run away from him. The jackal could not understand why all the animals were so terrified of him all of a sudden. He went to the river and looked at his reflection. When he saw that he had been coloured blue by the dye, he understood that all the animals were running away from him because they were terrified.

He called out to them, "Friends! Do not be afraid of me. The Creator of this jungle, the Almighty God has sent me to be your king. I am here to protect you. Do not fear me."

The other animals were convinced and obeyed every instruction the jackal gave them. First he made them chase away all the other jackals from the forest. Next they were to hunt and bring him food everyday. The jackal lived this way for some days.

One day, when he was sitting surrounded by all the other animals, he heard a pack of jackals howling in the distance. Having been away from others of his kind for so long, he was overcome with joy at hearing other jackals. He raised his head and howled in response. Hearing him, all the other animals realized that they had been fooled by an ordinary jackal. They all attacked him and tore him to pieces.

English Lesson 2020051931 The Hare and the Tortoise

Dear parents and all students,
There are 7 steps to be followed through in this lesson 2020051931

STEPS :
2.0 Read a short story.
(Guess 12 words by listening and writing down 12 words in  your exercise book).

1.0 Watch the video clip below, sing along.

2.0 Read the short story below :

The Rabbit and the Turtle

One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast he could run. He was laughing at the turtle for being so slow. Much to the rabbit's surprise, the turtle challenged him to a race. The rabbit thought this was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The fox was the umpire of the race. As the race began, the rabbit raced way ahead of the turtle, just like everyone thought. The rabbit reached the halfway point and he could not see the turtle anywhere.

It was very hot. The rabbit felt very tired and so decided to take a break and take a short nap. Even if the turtle passed him, he would be able to race to the finish line and run ahead of him. All this time, the turtle kept walking step-by- step. He decided not to quit no matter how hot or tired he was. He just kept going. However, the rabbit slept longer than he had thought. When he woke up, he could not see the turtle anywhere! He raced at full speed to the finish line but he found the turtle there waiting for him.

THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE

‘Look at me!’ (1)_________the Hare to the other animals. ‘Just look how fast I can run.’
The Hare hopped across a field as fast as he could. All the animals agreed that the Hare (2)_____________ very fast. The Hare ran back.
‘See,’ he showed off. ‘I’m not even out of breath.’
‘Yeah that was fast,’ said a Fox.
‘So who wants a race?’ said the Hare. ‘Anybody think they could beat me?’
None of the animals (3) _________________
‘See,’ said the Hare. ‘You’re all too scared to even try.’
‘I’ll have a (4) ________________ ,’ said the Tortoise.
The Hare laughed. ‘You?The slowest creature in the whole world? I’m not wasting my time racing a Tortoise.’
‘What’s the matter?’ said the Tortoise. ‘Scared I might  (5)_________________ ?’
Some of the animals laughed at that, so the Hare said, ‘Alright then, Tortoise. Let’s (6)_____________ a race...right now...then we’ll see who’s laughing.’
‘Not today,’ said the Tortoise. ‘We’ll race next week. Got to do a bit of training first.’
Next morning the animals (7) _________________ the Tortoise do his ‘training’. First he did some gentle stretching exercises to warm himself up...and then he (8) _______________to run.
‘Has he started running yet?’ asked the Fox.
‘Hard to tell with Tortoises,’ said the Hippopotamus. ‘He’s definitely moving.’
‘Is he?’ said the Fox.
‘Tortoise, are you sure about this?’ said the Crow. ‘I mean the Hare is very fast and you...well...’
‘Don’t worry,’ said the Tortoise. ‘This is just day one. I’ll be better and better. You’ll see.’
On the day of the race, crowds of animals (9)__________________ to watch. The Tortoise slowly made his way to the starting line and then suddenly...the Hare ran at top speed wearing a brand new track suit and four expensive-looking shoes.
‘The race starts here,’ said the Fox pointing to a line on the ground. ‘And ends at that tree on the other side of the field. First one to touch the tree is the winner.’
‘Right, let’s get on with it,’ said the Hare. ‘Ready Tortoise?Ready to see some real speed?’
‘I’m ready,’ said the Tortoise.
‘Ready, steady...go!’ said the Fox and the race started.
The Hare roared off . The Tortoise was still crossing the starting line. The Hare ran back to the Tortoise.
‘Didn’t you hear him say go? You can start you know.’
‘I have started,’ said the Tortoise.
‘Look,’ said the Hare. ‘You’re going so slowly I’m going to have a rest. Might even have a little sleep. I’ll continue the race when I (10)_________________ up and still beat you by miles.’

The Hare lay down in the sun and fell asleep. The Tortoise kept going. Slowly, steadily he moved across the field and by evening time he was getting close to the finishing tree. Still,  the Hare slept under the tree,  and now the animals started to get excited.
‘You know what? I think he might win,’ said the Fox.
‘I can’t believe it,’ said the Hippopotamus. ‘The Tortoise might actually win.’
The animals started to get excited and as the Tortoise (11)________________  close to the finishing tree they started to cheer.
‘Come on Tortoise,’ they shouted. ‘Nearly there. Keep going old friend. Keep going.’
But the noise of the cheering crowd woke up the Hare. He looked across the field,  the Tortoise about to reach the tree and in a flash he was running.
The Tortoise knew the Hare thundering up behind him but he kept going...and going...and (12)___________ he was there. Just in time the Tortoise touched the tree with his nose. He’d done it. The Tortoise had beaten the Hare fair and square.
‘There you go,’ said the Hippopotamus. ‘Slow and steady’s sometimes better than fast and flashy.’
‘Not fair,’ said the Hare. ‘I was asleep. We have to run the race again. It’s not fair.’

But no-one was listening to the Hare.

Petua Masuk Hutan, Jungle Rules

ILMU HUTAN
RUGI TAK BACA.!
(juga baik untuk Kaki Pancing)
Pengalaman masuk hutan, berkawan ngan bebudak asli ni, dan termasuk kengkawan yg memang askar, banyak benda yg saya belajar..iaitu,

1. Lumut Taik Kera. Yg bestnya, lumut ni hanya tumbuh didenai (laluan binatang atau orang), so kalau sesat..ikut je laluan ni diwaktu malam, insyaAllah..tak langgar pokok.

2. Ular tedung. Kalau terserempak dgn ular masa dlm hutan, jangan buat gerakan mengejut..stay still dan undur balik. - belajar dr orang asli.

3. Kera / lutong dan spesis yg sama. Spesis kera takkan lari bila kita libas dgn sebatang ranting kayu, in fact dia leih lincah dr gerakan ranting kita. Utk halau kera, patahkan pokok renek dgn daun dan ranting yg mengembang..dan hayunkan kat kera tu..baru lari (rasionalnya, ranting + daun yg kembang tu nampak lagi besar dr sebatang ranting) - belajar dr askar.

4. Harimau. kalau mancing dlm hutan, sedang dlm hutan tu bunyi penuh dgn unggas serangga, tetiba hutan tu jadik sunyi sepi, biasanya ada haiwan menghendap..terutamanya harimau, harimau akar dan beruang. Selepas hutan jadi 'diam', kemudian disusuli dgn bau hamis..confirm harimau..hehehe..apa lagi, bagi letup satu mercun bola la.. - belajar dr orang asli.

5. Beruang madu. Hutan paya kat Malaysia banyak beruang madu (yg kecik tu, sekerat pinggan dgn dada kaler oren),kalau terserempak, kita yg perlu menjerit dan buat seperti nak kejar, automatik beruang tu akan lari. - belajar dr orang asli.

6. Kepala air. Kalo khemah kat tepi sungai, jangan buat khemah kat tepi air, buat dibahagian /kawasan yg pokok2nya besar. Tandakan satu batu yg besar, kalo tengah malam batu tu hilang, maknanya air tengah naik la tu..- belajar dgn kaki pancing.

7. Tanda-tanda kepala air. Kalo hujan kat hulu, biasanya akan ada kepala air (air naik dr dlm perbezaan paras 5 kaki tak sampai 10 minit). Tanda2 lain yg kita perlu tengok ialah kehadiran buih2 putih kat tempat tak berbuih (klu kat tempat air jatuh for sure ada buih)..maksud saya kat tempat air mengalir biasa, tetiba ada buih2 halus timbul. Tu tandanya arus bawah lagi laju dr arus atas. pastu, akan ada daun basah hanyut, then barulah ada perubahan warna air, dr jernih ke warna oren, coklat dll. Biasanya perubahan ni sekejap saja, dalam 5-6 minit sebelum arus besar datang (kepala air)..sama kes kat Dam Chamang, bentong..saya dah kena. Tambah skit, kalo kepala air datang, bunyi air lebih kuat dr biasa, dr kejauhan dah dengar..

8. Nak masak air. Jangan amik air kat tepi sungai, amik kat tengah sungai atau tempat yg mengalir deras. Rationalnya, tikus, rusa, kancil, babi dll kencing kat tepi sungai, arus akan tolak air kencing tu ke tebing. So, amik yg tengah2. - belajar ngan askar.

9. Binatang besar. Kera atau monyet akan lari dan buat bising bila ada bahaya i.e harimau, gajah, badak, seladang dll. Kalau dr jauh dengar bunyi kera dl buat bising..tentu ada binatang besar tengah lalu. - belajar dgn orang asli.

10. Makan makanan yg dimasak i.e ikan bakar dll. Semasa kat hutan, kami mesti makan sampai habis dan hanyutkan / tanam lebihan makanan sebab bau makanan ni akan menarik perhatian beruang, kera, gajah utk datang bertandang. - ni belajar ngan kaki pancing lain.

11. Buat semua perkara sebelum jam 5.00 petang. - belajar dr pengalaman.

12. Hutan yg bising dgn bunyi unggas lebih baik di waktu malam drpd hutan yg sunyi sepi. Bila hutan sepi, mesti ada apa2 yg tak kena. - orang asli.
Ok, masuk bab amalan bukak khemah (Rule and system dia la..bukan amalan yg spritual ni..).

1. Cari kanopi yg masih hijau. Bila dah tentukan nak khemah, dongak ke atas, cari pokok muda dan kanopi (rimbunan daun) yg masih hijau..so, risiko kena hempap ranting dahan bila angin kuat rendah.

2. Ketinggian dr paras air. Bila dah tentukan mana bahagian yg lapang nak dibuat, tentukan ketinggian khemah sekurang2 4 kaki dr aras air sungai, kalau landai..jangan buat khemah kat situ, biasanya kawasan landai, akan ada banyak pokok2 rendah dan renek mcm pokok senduduk dll..tu tandanya air selalu naik kat kawasan tu. Cari kat kawasan yg pokoknya besar2.

3. Tentukan laluan / denai didalam radius kawasan 20 meter dr khemah. Jangan buat khemah didalam laluan denai, sebab laluan denai bukan utk manusia sahaja, ianya adalah laluan binatang lain jugak. kang seladang tumpang tidur.

https://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/go-outside/camping-safety-avoid-wild-animal-encounters/

4. Bersihkan lantai tapak perkhemahan drpada daun dan pokok2 renek (potong je pokok2 kecik ni,kang dia tumbuh balik). Pakai je ranting pokok2, sapu sampai nampak tanah dan takdak daun, so, risiko terkena sengat lipan, kala jengking dll tu kurang skit.

5. Dah ready, baru tabur karbaid kaler kuning tu.

6. Kalau pakai khemah jenis igloo atau T shape, pasang khemah kat secara menghadap /berhadapan dan unggun api kat tengah.

7. Dlm nyalaan unggun api tu, standby dgn beberapa batang kayu panjang. Kalo boleh, sesuai dgn jumlah orang yg pergi camping tu. Bila ada bahaya, perimeter diceroboh, apa lagi..capai la kayu yg ada api ni sebagai senjata, parang pisau..binatang tak takut. Api? confirm depa lari..

8. Kalo ikut pengalaman saya, kami memang buat perimeter, risau gak kot2 binatang datang (beruang terutamanya) datang ke khemah sebab bau masakan kami. Kami suka buat pagar dgn tali tangsi disambing dgn loceng, terlanggar je tali tu, loceng akan bunyi...
