MRS LAI'S GARDEN
Mrs Lai is seventy-seven years old. She lives in an old folks’ home. The home looks after old people who have no children or relatives to stay with.
If you visit the home, you will see that it has a beautiful garden. Do you know who looks after it? Yes, Mrs Lai does, She is the gardener of the home. “When I came here some years ago, there was nobody to tend to the garden,” she said. “Everyone preferred to do the cooking and cleaning. So I decided to do the work .”
Every day Mrs Lai works in the garden from early morning till lunch-time. She waters the plants, weeds the flower-beds and hoes the soil. Some of the flowers which she planted are orchids, roses and daisies.
Is the work tiring for the old lady? Yes, Mrs Lai often gets aches and pains all over her body. “But the exercise does me good,” she said. In the home she is one of the healthiest people.
